The Last Home Stand All-Star Charity event did not turn out to be what is expected by the Filipino basketball fans. Instead of putting up an exhibition game, Gilas Pilipinas and NBA all-stars selection just showed how Gilas Pilipinas will prepare for the Fiba World Cup.
“First of all, we would like to apologize to our Filipinos fans for having disappointed them,” said business tycoon and Philippines sports supporter Manny V. Pangilinan during a hastily called press conference at the Smart Araneta Coliseum. “We ourselves were disappointed with the way things have developed.”
According to US-based event organizer, East West CEO Maria Espaldon NBA did not approve the application to sanction the said event, as reported by Spin.ph.
“We wrote the NBA that we are holding a charity event, that’s what happens in the US for example, there are games that players play for the love of the game – for charity,” Espaldon said. “So when we applied that this is just for charity, we proposed it in April this year, and they told us that the sanction deadline has passed, we asked to give us an exemption and they said no.”
Espaldon added that the said charity event was organized for a basketball clinic, but it was not made clear in the promotional materials. Even the Gilas Pilipinas went expecting to have a five-on-five exhibition match.
Filipinos online have expressed their dismay through jokes, and angry comments and some still supports MVP. One online comment says, “Gilas The Last Home Stand Epic Fail. I mean, super epic fail. Palpak sobra.”
Another statement says, “Saludo parin ako kay MVP, kung di sa kanya walang gilas at mga gnyan laro, nagkataon lang na may pumalpak kaya di natuloy.”
